BECKY HEBERT'S INJURY HIGHLIGHTED IN GREECE MESSENGER POST

INJURY A SAD PART OF SPORTS
By Mike Bailey, Greece Post Staff Writer

[January 22, 2010]
It was tough to watch Becky Hebret limp around on the sidelines of Hilton's basketball game against Greece Arcadia last week.  The usually nimble multi-sport star was reduced to a hobble after suffering a tear of her ACL during Hilton's Christmas Tournament.

(NOTE:  Becky's injury actually occurred during the 1st quarter of the Hilton-Greece Athena game on January 5, 2010, not during the Lady Cadet Classic.  Becky had already scored 10 points before the injury! Becky's ACL Tear has ended her season and will require surgery followed by a seven-month rehab.  Ironically, Becky's injury occurred just after the return of teammate, Biz Reinhardt from a sprained MCL injury incurred playing soccer.)

Hearing Athletic Director Mike Giruzzi’s account of her going down in pain was sad and frustrating as it’s another basketball star that we won’t get to watch play again at this level. All you can hope for is a speedy recovery and no future injuries as you can’t erase time and undo these travesties.

Injuries are unfortunately the sad part of sports and really are unavoidable. They come with the territory of hustle and contact. Luckily there haven’t been too many significant injuries during this winter season but there have been some.

Hilton has been hit especially hard as Colby Morabito was in a cast after falling awkwardly on his wrist and could miss the rest of the year for the boys team.

Webster Thomas’ Jake Bolan may miss significant time after injuring an ankle last week. Ironically he hurt the other ankle during football season.

Greece Arcadia boys basketball team was looking at several injuries earlier in the year including an eye injury to Pete Clark, but luckily they seemed to be in good health recently.

Greece Athena girls were also hit hard as forward Shannon Kirkpatrick missed time with an ankle injury and Stephanie Imon will finally be getting back to the team after weeks away with a broken wrist. The team had only nine healthy players last week.

Even coaches aren’t free from injuries. Mendon boys basketball coach Rich Copeland threw out his back and had to miss a game.

Marcus Blithers of Churchville-Chili missed a bunch of time due to bronchitis and although its not an injury its still keeping him off the court.

These players of course only scratch the surface of athletes who have either significant injuries or bumps and bruises throughout Section 5. It would probably take a whole page to account for every athlete that has missed at least one game due to ailment.

The hard work they put their bodies through and the sacrifice they give for their teams and schools is just another reason that makes high school sports great.

Again short of practicing hard and keeping their bodies in the best shape possible, there isn’t much that can be done to prevent freak injuries.

A big thank you to the injured ones could go a long way in the healing process though.  [Article Link]

2008-09 AAA SECTIONALS
LADY CADETS SUFFER QUARTERFINAL LOSS - END 2008-09 SEASON 13-8

After splitting wins in two regular season games, the Lady Cadets and Fairport Red Raiders squared off in the Quarterfinals of the Girls Section V AAA Tournament at Hilton HS.  At the end of the first quarter, the Lady Cadets led by 1, at the end of the half, Fairport led by 2.  Early in the third quarter, the two teams traded baskets until mid-way through the quarter when Fairport, led by Allyson DiMagno, held the Lady Cadets defensively while their offense went on a scoring run to earn a trip to the Sectional Semifinals on March 3 at Gates Chili.  The Raiders won 58-37.  In her last game as a Lady Cadet, senior Keri Galatio led Hilton scorers with 16 points and Becky Hebert added 7 points.  The Lady Cadets finished the season 13-8, winning 5 of their last six games going into the Sectionals and won both the 2009 (Hilton) Lady Cadets Classic and the (Spencerport) Coach Chow Tournament in January and their Monroe County Tournament bracket in February.

Congratulations to Coach Jeff Eichas and the Lady Cadets on a GREAT SEASON!
